My Border Collie cross is a high energy, heat machine. She burns more energy sleeping than most dogs burn at a full run.

That said, she loves a cool surface. I was concerned for her sleeping on our stone foyer tile, as it is too shiny (GOT to replace that stuff with something less slick) and at 15 she is too old to be losing her footing trying to get up. So this mat seemed like a 'good idea' (tm).

She was skeptical at first, but being a willing creature, I told her to lie on it, and stay - after 5 minutes of staring at me like I was the anti-Christ, her expression changed to delight (that dog smiles. Really.) It is her favorite place to lay down now. It is against an outer wall on tile, that is laid over a cement slab. It gets COLD - it is 26 degrees outside and I just measured the temperature of the mat at 54 degrees (It gets COLD in that foyer!). Perfect for her, she is in full sprawl. (If you don't have a Raytek MiniTemp 'gun', get one, they are terrific!)

As to leaks - haven't seen any yet, but I keep her nails fairly short (they don't touch the floor) and she doesn't abuse it. She's only 64#, so not actually a large dog. Also, I don't overfill it, just enough water to surround her, not necessarily float her. I have had to add a couple of quarts of water over the past year, so the water is going SOMEWHERE, but I don't see any leaks or telltale mold under it.

Unfortunately, if you're considering the Cat Veranda, you should not only read the positive reviews, but also pay very careful attention to the reasons why the "James Bond" reviewer gave it one star. I won't repeat that reviewer's text, but I wish I'd seen it before we bought this item. I urge you to study the content of that one-star review so that you will understand what problems you must be prepared to overcome if you decide to go ahead and get the Cat Veranda. You will absolutely have to do some extra work, including some creative problem-solving, in order to compensate for the serious defects which "James Bond" quite accurately describes.

And when you set the unit in your window, you will see how utterly unnecessary these problems are. Someone really dropped the ball when this product went from the cocktail-napkin-sketch phase to the manufacturing phase, apparently skipping that crucial middle phase of design->test->troubleshoot->redesign->repeat as necessary until the product is viable.

There is truly no excuse for the fact that the lip which needs to overlap the window sash is so skimpy that no such overlap is possible, no matter what kind of sash you have. And if you apply the foam strip to the bottom of the sash as directed, then the lip doesn't even come within 1/4 inch of meeting the sash, let alone overlapping.

The result is that, in order to secure the unit for adequate kitty safety, you have to ignore a lot of the printed instructions while you spend time jury-rigging extra brackets and improvising makeshift anchoring strategies. If only that lip extended upwards by another 1/2 - 3/4 inch, you would be able to install the unit with far less trouble, your cat would be safer, and a first-floor window installation would be a lot less of a wide-open opportunity for burglars. And both ingenuity and a certain amount of force are necessary in order to secure the side panels adequately, again for cat safety and security, and also to keep the weather out.

After all the effort, extra hardware, swearing and busted knuckles involved in making this unit acceptably secure, what you end up with may prove reasonably enjoyable for your cat, but you should be aware of one more limitation: this unit is actually quite small for all the expense and bother. Our kitten is only 7 months old, and quite petite, but she finds the Veranda to be fairly confining. A standard size window can accommodate a much more spacious box than this one in height and width, and a well-anchored unit could safely extend further out as well. So, it looks like I will probably start building a homemade veranda box to replace this very expensive disappointment fairly soon.

Another option would be to modify the case from an old air conditioner (which was obviously the inspiration for this product). This could be done quite easily. Those Panasonic a/c units which sold like crazy in the 90s are starting to show up in the recycling yards, and they have that nice big removable sleeve-type outer casing which would work just great. Such a box, adapted with a securely fastened floor, and with side grilles installed, would be a lot more roomy and would attach very securely. If I'd known all this beforehand, we might have saved money and aggravation, and ended up with something our pampered puss might like better. I finally found these which are 26" high and were not overly expensive. The step height is steep and was a little difficult for my very small dog to negotiate at first, but after some practice she is able to run up, and with a little more care, go down these steps just fine.

They seem to be good quality and I like the carpeting that they are covered with. They are also not too heavy. I have had no complaints so far and would recommend them for anyone with a small dog that needs to get up somewhere high.

Most of our windows have shelves for the cats to use but this one window near the wall heater doesn't and I thought it'd be nice to get some sort of cat perch--something I could move when I needed to get it out of the way, something I could put stuff under. Tried several other model and all were useless--our male is very long and weighs about 15 pounds--he walks on (not jumps) the other ones and they all start sinking off the windowsill. Since I'd had one like this one in the past (a past cat used it successfully), I thought maybe we'll use this one. However, I didn't want to drill holes into the windowsills (it's an old victorian building), and this shelf won't stay in place without drilling holes. The board is particle board and only about 1/4" thick--our boy would probably have ripped this thing to shreds fairly fast. The legs are metal (a plus) but the feet didn't secure the struts in position and every time the cat got on the platform, the legs started shifting downward slowly. I was afraid they'd collapse eventually and I really didn't want to have to invent some way of propping the legs in place. So it's now all leaning against a wall in the utility room. We bought a tall scratching post with a shelf/bed platform on top of the post--all really well made out of real heavy wood. The cats can scratch the post (with sisal rope), jump on the platform (and it doesn't move), go swinging around on it and the thing is sturdy enough so they feel totally secure. I can move it (yea, it's heavy but I can move it) when necessary. It works. Maybe for a smaller cat this shelf thing might be ok. My cat tree is missing one of the mice on the string and I second what another reviewer said: the stairs do not work. Whoever designed the stairs messed up on that part because there was no way they could be put on. If you screw them in, they hang straight down. Also, the top condo needed a longer screw, so I went out and bought one to solve that problem. It just sucks because I have these cat tree stairs hanging out in my closet now with no use for them (any suggestions?). I emailed the company about the problems and they sent me 2 really crappy screws that had been sloppily cut to another size as well as an extra condo piece (which I didn't need but was happy to get), but they didn't do anything about my missing mouse and those BS screws did not fix the stair issue. They wanted pictures showing the problems as if they don't know about it already. & FYI I put blankets inside of the condos because the cover material, while soft, is thin.

That being said, I am happy to have received this as a gift, even with the issues. My cats love it and use it daily to scratch, sleep in, or climb on. I would probably have been more angry though if I'd been the one who bought it.

Like the title says my dog, Tank has not said one bad thing about this bed. He is 125 lbs and sleeps in this bed all of the time. I purchased it because I was tired of him sleeping in bed with me, He is big, he snores, he is a bed hog. So I dropped the money on this bed and it has been a great purchase. I had to coax him onto it the first use, but after that he didn't get off of it for about 15 hours. I have washed the cover, and the stuffing was hard to get back into it. but now it looks fluffier perhaps the cover shrunk a little. I put a folded up blanket underneath the bed for added padding. I'm not sure how much that helps but like I said Tank sleeps there every night. Our dog loves this bed. He is a 40-50lb. beagle mix and he has room to snuggle in or stretch out. He is a senior dog and really likes the bolsters. I see many reviews for the product based off a cats attention to it. Cats lose interest fast! You can't rely on a cat's reaction in order to rate a cat toy or in this case, a cave. :) Most reviews I see overall liked the product, but those who did not - based it on the cat. From what I've read and experienced by owning one for my cat Pixie, the product is made well and folds up nice. There isn't much more to the product itself besides the crinkling noise that may be annoying - which could then be passed as a negative on the product. My cat uses the crinkle cave constantly and she loves it. Her claws get stuck but not much damage to the product which is great! I won't have to purchase a new one for a while the way she "rough-houses" in it. I haven't had any issues with it and agree that it is made well, but I'd rethink those 2 and 3 star ratings as people tend to purchase on the stars without reading all reviews (who has that much time?). One thing I will say is the tunnel section can be a little tight for those larger cats, but I don't see a problem for the majority of medium size (7-10 lb.) out there. I have a plump kitty (12-13 lb) so I keep the tunnel off so she doesn't get stuck (if I'm not home). I believe this is more of a 4-5 star rating (myself giving a 5 because I like it so much), only bringing it down from perfect by a fraction due to the noise it creates. Even still, the name is "Crinkle Cave" - you have to expect noise! I'd advise you leave this in a room away from the bedroom if you're trying to sleep. I have got this product about a month ago. And so far I have tried everything (toys and catnip) to get my cats interested in it, but they just don't care.
